Triathlon Racing 101

Set a realistic goal.
With a hammie injury going as far back as October, where running just made it worse, I didn't have much to work with once bike racing season was over for me. I decided to jumpstart my tri season earlier this year, so I set a realistic goal and gradually dove right in. Fortunately, with a healthy hammie. Shortest run, 3 miles. Longest run, 10 miles…once. At the end of the day, I was very pleased with my performance given the circumstances. My lack of training aside, out of the three events that were going on, Boulder was the most stacked. Plus, racing in the Phillipines or Michigan vs Boulder…c'mon!

Train on your TT bike more often than not.
When you spend months and months training for bike racing, you kind of forget that you have a TT bike. I think those few rides on my trusty steed were pretty helpful. Yup, my bum was feeling it about 30 miles in.

Have a good and plenty pre-race meal.
I always have the simplest form of pizza and pasta 1-2 days before race day…and lots of it. One of my worst fears while racing is bonking…when you've exhausted your glycogen stores. Thankfully, I love to eat. It's one of my finest talents. Below is a picture of pizza dough hanging on the wall at Fiocchi's Pizzeria…I wasn't able to get a good picture of the kid playing voodoo with it.

Confirm the swim turns.
It happens to athletes whether they want to admit it or not…they miss a buoy and end up getting off course. It has happened to me, resulting in an eventual DQ, so I asked a reliable person to confirm the turns before the start. Just ask the current World Champ, Leanda Cave. No big deal.

Never judge others based on what they wear.
Because you *just* might find yourself in their shoes one day. Before this weekend, I never thought I'd purchase or wear a pair of Crocs. To be honest, I always thought they looked kinda goofy and made fun of anyone who wore them. They saved my day, weekend, and most importantly, my feet. And, I think they look pretty snazzy.

Always go for squishy over old.
Long story short, I had a new pair of racing shoes that were great on my feet except for one thing. When they would get wet, they would make obnoxious squishy noises with every step. So, I decided to use an old pair that I had lying around. Clearly, that was a big mistake. My new, new pair is on its way…#zoot

Stay focused.
No matter how big your blisters get, no matter how much it hurts when they break with 3-4 miles to go, stay focused on your task because your day is easy compared to some...

Have fun!
If you aren't having fun, why are you doing it?

But not SO much that you end up on a stretcher…

Enjoy the scenery.
I never get a chance to just hang out after a race. Usually, I'll pack up my stuff and go home. Thanks to my friends Ashlee and Monica, I was able to enjoy some of the scenery in Downtown Boulder.

Thanks to Ashlee, I was able to go on a comfortable recovery spin the following day and enjoy some fresh CO air.

Don't underestimate cats.
This is Millie. Before I met her, I always had a thing against cats because they can be so impersonal and standoffish. I swear, Millie is not a cat. She likes to cuddle and she won't leave your side. Woof…meow.

Paying extra for good food at the airport is worth it sometimes...

Take care of your body post-race.
Make sure your body fully recovers from the race, both mentally and physically, before you attack your next hard training block. Thanks to Ashlee and Monica, I was able to tend to my feet for safe travels back home; thanks to these bandages, I'm ready to run today!
